Description: An aquatic plant with large, showy flowers; only grows in still or slowly moving fresh water. The fruit is very ornamental, with the seeds being a favorite of water fowl.

Germination Note: Place seed in a container of water. Discard seeds that float as they are not viable and will not germinate; the viable or good seed will sink to the bottom.  American Lotus seeds have hard seed coats that are impermeable to water.  File through the seed coat and germinate the seed in water. Sow 3-day-old sprouts in wet or submerged soil under full sun and warm weather.
